Rusty water from the hot tap indicates internal tank corrosion — the anode rod has been depleted and the steel tank wall is corroding. This is not a filtration problem; it is a tank failure in progress. Replace before a rupture occurs.
Any standing water around the base of the tank — even a small amount — indicates an active leak from a fitting, drain valve, or tank wall. A small tank leak typically becomes a large one without warning. Call immediately.
Sediment accumulated on the tank floor is being superheated as the burner fires. This reduces efficiency, stresses the tank liner, and indicates the tank is nearing end of life. Not a safety emergency, but a clear replacement signal.
Water temperature varying significantly between showers — scalding then cold — usually points to a failing thermostat, dip tube failure, or sediment accumulation disrupting heat transfer. In an older tank, repair is rarely cost-effective.
The T&P relief valve opens to release excess pressure — if it is dripping regularly, either the valve is failing or the system pressure is abnormal. The latter often means the expansion tank has failed. We check both on every tank replacement.
