Heat Pump Water Heaters in Surrey, BC — 3× More Efficient & CleanBC Rebate Eligible

Accolade Heating installs heat pump water heaters (HPWH) for Surrey homes — electric hybrid water heaters that use a refrigerant cycle to achieve COP 2.0–3.5, delivering 200–350% efficiency versus electric resistance tanks. CleanBC rebate up to $1,000 on qualifying models.

How It Works

How a Heat Pump Water Heater Works — and Why It Uses So Much Less Electricity

A conventional electric water heater uses a resistance element to heat water — essentially an electric toaster element submerged in water. 1 kWh of electricity produces 1 kWh of heat. That is 100% efficiency — the theoretical maximum for resistance heating.

A heat pump water heater works completely differently. It uses a small refrigerant cycle to extract heat from the surrounding air and transfer it to the water — similar to how a heat pump heats a home in winter. This allows it to deliver 2–3.5 kWh of heat for every 1 kWh of electricity consumed. That is 200–350% efficiency — because you are moving heat rather than creating it.

2–3.5× lower electricity cost versus a conventional electric resistance tank
Cools and dehumidifies the mechanical room as a side effect of heat extraction
Built-in resistance backup — element activates in very cold conditions
CleanBC rebate up to $1,000 on qualifying models replacing electric resistance tanks
Lower carbon emissions than gas tankless when powered by BC Hydro's clean grid

Space requirement note: Heat pump water heaters need adequate space for the compressor to draw in air — typically at least 700–1,000 cubic feet of surrounding air volume. In a small, sealed mechanical room, efficiency drops and noise can be an issue. We assess your mechanical room before recommending a HPWH — and suggest alternatives if the space does not suit the technology.

Common Questions

Heat Pump Water Heaters Surrey BC — FAQ

Does a heat pump water heater qualify for the CleanBC rebate in Surrey?
Yes, when replacing an electric resistance water heater. The CleanBC rebate for heat pump water heaters is up to $1,000 for qualifying models replacing electric tanks. The installation must be by a registered CleanBC contractor — which Accolade is. We verify eligibility before installation and handle all documentation. Note: replacing a gas tank or tankless with a HPWH does not currently qualify for the CleanBC water heater rebate (though it may qualify for other programs).
How much space does a heat pump water heater need?
Most manufacturers recommend a minimum of 700–1,000 cubic feet of air volume surrounding the unit for optimal performance. This is roughly a 10×10×8 ft room. The unit can also work in a smaller space that is not sealed — for example, a mechanical room with louvred doors to an adjacent basement, or one that opens to a garage. If your space is significantly smaller or sealed, we may recommend alternatives.
Does a heat pump water heater make noise?
Yes — HPWHs have a compressor and fan that produce noise similar to a small window air conditioner (around 45–55 dB). This is louder than a conventional water heater. For mechanical rooms separated from living areas, it is typically not an issue. For mechanical rooms adjacent to bedrooms, it is worth considering placement carefully — we assess this during the site visit.
How does a heat pump water heater perform in BC's climate?
Excellently — provided the mechanical room stays above about 5°C year-round, which is typical for Surrey basement and main-floor mechanical rooms. The unit's efficiency (COP) decreases as surrounding air temperature drops, but BC's mild climate and insulated mechanical rooms mean this is rarely an issue in Surrey. The built-in resistance backup handles very cold conditions automatically.
