Accolade Heating installs heat pump water heaters (HPWH) for Surrey homes — electric hybrid water heaters that use a refrigerant cycle to achieve COP 2.0–3.5, delivering 200–350% efficiency versus electric resistance tanks. CleanBC rebate up to $1,000 on qualifying models.

A conventional electric water heater uses a resistance element to heat water — essentially an electric toaster element submerged in water. 1 kWh of electricity produces 1 kWh of heat. That is 100% efficiency — the theoretical maximum for resistance heating.
A heat pump water heater works completely differently. It uses a small refrigerant cycle to extract heat from the surrounding air and transfer it to the water — similar to how a heat pump heats a home in winter. This allows it to deliver 2–3.5 kWh of heat for every 1 kWh of electricity consumed. That is 200–350% efficiency — because you are moving heat rather than creating it.

Space requirement note: Heat pump water heaters need adequate space for the compressor to draw in air — typically at least 700–1,000 cubic feet of surrounding air volume. In a small, sealed mechanical room, efficiency drops and noise can be an issue. We assess your mechanical room before recommending a HPWH — and suggest alternatives if the space does not suit the technology.
| Good Candidate | May Not Suit | |
|---|---|---|
| Current water heater | Electric resistance tank (replacing for rebate eligibility) | Gas tank or tankless (no CleanBC rebate for gas-to-electric) |
| Mechanical room space | 700+ cubic feet available, or room ventilates to adjacent space | Small sealed closet under 700 cubic feet |
| Electrical supply | 240V circuit available or easily added | No panel capacity — would require electrical upgrade |
| Noise sensitivity | Mechanical room away from bedrooms or living areas | Mechanical room adjacent to bedroom wall |
| Ownership timeline | Plan to stay 5+ years to recover upfront cost | Planning to sell within 2–3 years |
"James installed and has been servicing our Furnace, Central AC and Tankless water heater. His attention to detail, level of transparency, and dependability each year has been greatly appreciated."
"After 12 years of having James maintain, repair and install anything required for our gas, heating and plumbing needs, I continue to highly recommend him. Professional, incredibly thorough, educates us every step."
"I can't recommend James enough. He took on an extremely difficult job with our home's heating system. Most other plumbers flat out refused the job. James turned a nightmare scenario into a perfectly functioning system."
